What is provided in hall?

All hall bedrooms have a bed, desk, chair, noticeboard, storage and shelving. Residents also have access to laundry facilities, bike parking, a common room, HallNet and the hall Warden/committee support system.

University accommodation guidance also lists the following as provided: pillows, kettle and toaster, curtains, desk lamp, iron and ironing board, vacuum cleaner or dustpan and brush, bins, and—in self-catered halls such as Butler Court—an oven, microwave, fridge/freezer and electric cooker with hob, oven and grill.

Full 'what is provided' guidance

What should I pack?

The University recommends bringing:

  • duvet, sheets and duvet cover — check your room's bed size first
  • towels and tea towels
  • coat hangers
  • mugs, crockery and cutlery
  • some start-up groceries
  • cooking utensils and saucepans for self-catered accommodation
  • toilet rolls where required for en-suite/shared en-suite facilities

Air fryers are permitted, but they must stay in the kitchen and be kept clean and well maintained. The University suggests waiting until you arrive and discussing appliances with flatmates to avoid unnecessary duplicates.

Personal electrical items should meet applicable European safety standards and carry the appropriate CE marking.

University packing checklist

What not to pack

For safety, the University's current packing guidance says not to bring:

  • personal heaters or electric blankets
  • kettles
  • chip pans or deep-fat fryers
  • rice cookers or grills
  • indoor BBQ trays
  • clip-on desk lamps
  • candles or incense sticks
  • cube adaptors
  • personal refrigerators, unless medically required and approved/provided by the University
  • pets
  • e-scooters, e-bikes or e-skateboards

Bedding and kitchen starter packs

If you are travelling a long distance or arriving internationally and cannot easily bring bedding or kitchen equipment, the University links to UniKitOut, which can arrange essentials to be ready for your arrival.

The University's current discount information lists LOUGH10 for 10% off orders over £50 and LOUGHFREEDEL for free delivery on orders under £50.

If you arrive in Semester 2, the University advises that your order will need to be collected from the campus parcel office.

Laundry information and current prices

Cleaning, waste & recycling

In University halls, bedrooms and en-suites are normally cleaned once a fortnight, kitchens and corridors weekly, and communal bathrooms/toilets at least three times a week.

You still need to clean spillages, keep the fridge tidy, wash and put away crockery/cutlery, and leave your room tidy on its cleaning day.

Recycle clean plastics, cans, cartons, cardboard, paper, foil and empty aerosols. Glass should be rinsed and taken to the glass bank using the kitchen bucket; broken glass uses the separate container. Use food-waste caddies where provided.

Cleaning and recycling guidance

Common Room

Open 8am–11pm daily, with TV, sound system, sofas, pool and table tennis.

Wi-Fi & Hallnet

hallnet is the network for smart devices and games consoles in halls. A wired connection gives a better connection for laptops, PCs and consoles; free Ethernet cables are available from Hall Reception or the Library.

Current supported devices include Windows 11, Android 14+, macOS 14+, iOS 16+, PlayStation 4/5 and Xbox One/Series S/Series X. Smart TVs, Alexa, Fire Stick and Roku have separate Hallnet setup instructions.

Personal wireless printers are not supported; use campus printers or connect your own printer by USB.

Dining

Butler Court is self-catered. Food and drink options are available across campus.

Guests

You are responsible for the behaviour of your visitors while they are in hall.

For 2026–27, overnight visitors require prior written consent from the Warden team. Please also check with your flatmates before inviting someone to stay.

Heating

Core heating season: 1 October–30 April. Typical schedule: weekdays 7–10am and 4–11pm; weekends 8am–11pm.

Bike storage

Butler Court residents have access to secure on-site bike storage. Collect a bike-shed key from Hall Reception, use a high-quality lock, and consider free University Security bicycle registration.

Bicycles are not permitted inside residential buildings. The stated exception is for members of Loughborough Students’ Cycling Club, whose bikes must be stored in a cycle bag before entering.

Bike storage and security

Parking

First-year undergraduates living in halls are not normally eligible for student parking unless exceptional-circumstances criteria apply.

If you bring a motor vehicle to Loughborough, you must register it with the University through Student Self Service, even if you do not intend to park it on campus.

For 2026/27, eligible standard student permits are listed at £40 per month. A permit does not guarantee a space. There is a 30-minute grace period for drop-off and collection.

The University also operates a free campus shuttle bus, so a car is usually unnecessary for getting around campus.

Current student parking guidance

Staying Safe

Fire safety
  • Read the fire notices in your flat and know your assembly point.
  • If the alarm sounds, leave immediately and calmly.
  • Assembly point: next to the Netball / Badminton Centre opposite F Block.
  • If you discover a fire, sound the alarm, evacuate and do not attempt to fight it unless trained.
  • Keep fire doors closed and never interfere with fire safety equipment.
  • Naked flames, candles, incense sticks and tea lights are not permitted.
  • Smoking and vaping are not permitted inside University buildings.
  • Close the bathroom door when showering and keep the kitchen door closed when cooking to reduce false alarms.
Hall security: key points

Block entrances have restricted resident key/card access. Lock your bedroom whenever you leave and do not let people you do not know into the block. University staff and contractors should carry identification.

Do not remove window restrictors and never wedge bedroom or kitchen fire doors open. Spare keys are held at Hall Reception; outside office hours contact the Duty Sub-Warden. A lost ID card can be cancelled through Security.

Health, safety and security guidance

Fire alarms and evacuations

Read the blue fire notice in your bedroom and know Butler Court's assembly point. If there is a fire, activate the nearest call point, close doors behind you and evacuate; do not attempt to use extinguishers unless trained.

A short 20–30 second alarm may be the scheduled weekly test. A continual alarm means you must evacuate immediately. Fire drills take place during the academic year.

Never cover a smoke detector or interfere with fire-safety equipment.

University fire-safety guidance

Contents insurance

Students living in University halls are covered by Howden for Students contents insurance.

You should register/confirm your cover online so you can see exactly what is and is not insured, access your policy documents and contact the claims team. The Howden for Students service also provides access to the claims portal and information about optional additional cover, such as worldwide theft, damage or loss cover where this is not included in the standard policy.

The Howden for Students app also includes access to 24/7 confidential wellbeing support.

Contents insurance information and confirm your cover

Personal safety and security
  • Lock your room and close windows when you leave.
  • Do not lend your Student ID card to anyone.
  • Report suspicious behaviour to Hall Management, the duty sub-warden or Security.
  • Avoid walking home alone in the dark where possible; tell someone your route and when you arrive.
  • Use hall cycle sheds. Security recommends a good-quality D-lock and offers free cycle registration.
  • Bikes are not normally allowed inside residential buildings. The University's moving-in guidance notes an exception for members of Loughborough Students Cycling Club when the bike is stored in a cycle bag.
  • Lost property found on campus is taken to the Security Office and is normally retained for up to 28 days.
SafeZone safety app

SafeZone is the University's free safety app connecting students directly with the 24/7 Security team.

You can use it to request emergency help or first aid, check in when studying or working late, report safety concerns and receive campus safety alerts.

Register with your Loughborough University email address.

Hall Regulations

Hall regulations are designed to protect residents and the wider community. The University's current regulations should always be treated as the authoritative source.

Electrical equipment and prohibited items

Electrical equipment must be in good working order, use a UK three-pin plug or suitable adaptor, and meet applicable safety standards. Hall Reception can arrange portable appliance testing (PAT) if requested.

Items prohibited or restricted by current hall guidance include chip pans/deep-fat fryers, personal heaters, kettles, non-compliant rice cookers, indoor BBQ trays, electric blankets, candles/incense, clip-on desk lights, cube adaptors, unapproved refrigerators, e-scooters, electronic diffusers, extra furniture, fireworks and door wedges.

Smoking, drugs, pets and damage

Smoking and vaping are not permitted in University buildings or within three metres of buildings, particularly doors and windows. Pets are not permitted in hall except where an authorised exception applies.

Illegal substances can lead to disciplinary action and possible termination of the accommodation licence. Damage should be reported promptly; where communal damage cannot be attributed to an individual, charges may be applied to the flat or block.

Read the full current hall regulations

Living Well Together

Respecting other residents
  • Do not use other residents’ belongings, cooking equipment or food without permission.
  • Check with flatmates before hosting parties or inviting overnight guests.
  • You are responsible for the behaviour of your guests.
Noise

Keep noise to a reasonable level. The hall noise curfew is 11pm during the week, when loud music and parties should reduce to a conversational level.

Additional restrictions apply during examination periods. If you are disturbed by persistent noise, contact the duty sub-warden.

Social media and conduct

Use social media responsibly. Inappropriate online behaviour can be investigated under University procedures.

The Warden may investigate minor offences and impose sanctions where appropriate; major offences are referred through University disciplinary procedures.

Support & Wellbeing

Student Wellbeing & Inclusivity

Support is available for disability, long-term health conditions, mental health and general wellbeing, including advice about reasonable adjustments and Disabled Students' Allowance.

A weekday wellbeing drop-in runs during teaching terms at the Bridgeman Building; the University's current listing is 11am–12.30pm Monday–Friday.

Wellbeing drop-in information

Report an incident or concern

The University's reporting portal can be used for concerns including bullying and harassment, hate incidents, stalking, safeguarding, sexual violence, domestic violence, substance misuse and mental health/wellbeing concerns.

You can report something affecting you, another student, or something you have witnessed.

Feeling low or experiencing depression

If feeling low is affecting your everyday life, lasts for around two weeks, or keeps returning, the University advises that this may be a sign of depression and that support is available.

Helpful self-care approaches listed by Student Services include talking to someone you trust, exercise, spending time outdoors, mindfulness, peer support, eating a balanced diet, reducing alcohol and avoiding smoking.

You can request support from a University Mental Wellbeing Adviser using the Health, Wellbeing and Disability referral form, or speak to your GP.

Worried about someone else?

If you are concerned that another student may be experiencing depression, Student Services recommends encouraging them to seek support from their GP or through the University's Health, Wellbeing and Disability referral route.

Practical support can also help: invite them to do something manageable that they normally enjoy, such as a short walk or another form of exercise, or spend some time with them doing something relaxing. Avoid dismissing how they feel or telling them simply to “snap out of it”.

If supporting someone is becoming difficult for you, speak to someone you trust or seek support yourself.

Information for Parents & Guardians

Moving to university is a significant transition. Butler Court residents are supported by the Warden and Sub-Warden team, Hall Management and reception staff, the University Accommodation team, 24/7 Security, and Student Services and Wellbeing.

Student privacy: University staff cannot normally discuss a student's accommodation or personal circumstances with a parent, guardian or other third party unless the student has given appropriate permission. Students are therefore encouraged to add a nominated contact.
Nominated contacts

The University recommends that students add a nominated contact, such as a parent or guardian. Without this, Accommodation staff may be unable to discuss accommodation matters with that person, including in urgent situations.

Nominated contact guidance

What support is available?
  • Hall Wardens and Sub-Wardens
  • Hall Managers and reception teams
  • the Accommodation team, available throughout the year
  • 24/7 University Security
  • Student Services and Wellbeing teams

Students should contact the relevant service themselves wherever possible. Parents and guardians are welcome to raise concerns, but privacy requirements may limit what staff can disclose in response.

University information for parents and guardians

Changing rooms

There is a University transfer-request process for students who wish to change rooms, subject to availability and the applicable accommodation rules. For urgent welfare-related concerns, students should speak to the Hall Warden and Student Accommodation Centre.
